About The Game: The highlight here is that once and hopefully future ace Luis Severino pitched four solid innings of shutout ball with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks. Jonathan Loaisiga went another two innings with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk.
The Yankees had 10 hits and 6 walks.
Who’s Hot? Gleyber Torres hit his 38th home run. Cameron Maybin went 2 for 3 with a walk and a double.
Who’s Not? Austin Romine went 0 for 4. He caught one heck of a game though.
Why it Matters? The Bombers are tied with the Astros for the first seed in the AL. The tiebreaker goes to the Astros (they won the series 4-3 this year).
Other Thoughts/Pet Peeves: The Angels are a pretty miserable team. I’m not sure why Trout agreed to play his entire career for them. I guess he likes the weather out here.
Report from the Medical Staff: Giancarlo Stanton is supposedly being activated this week. I hope he can get it going in the last 10 games and play left field in the playoffs.
Aaron Hicks is pretty much done for the season. He’s “throwing in Tampa” but I don’t have much hope of a return this season. Given how Gardner has been playing (and how Hicks played this year), that’s not a big deal.
Edwin Encarnacion thinks that he’ll be back by the end of the regular season. I’m not sure if he‘s a starter at this point if the infield is Urshela, Gregorius, Torres and LeMahieu. Luke Voit should have the edge for the DH spot. Mike Ford should be given serious consideration but likely won’t be.
Gary Sanchez is hopefully resting very carefully and walking slowly around his house. We should have an update on him soon.
BREAKING - Dellin Betances is out for the season with an Achilles tear. We will provide updates to this story in our links post at 10:00 a.m. today.
Final Takeaway: A nice easy win against a lousy team.
Tonight’s Game: Game Two against the poor Angels. CC Sabathia (5-8, 4.95 ERA) faces Dillon Peters (3-3 4.83 ERA). The Yankees really need to try and run the table against the Angels in order to beat the Astros for the top seed.
