DH Game One Recap: Yankees Out-Homer the Orioles en Route to 5-3 Victory

About The First Game: The Yanks out-homered the Orioles 4-2, and won the first game at 5-3 today. Sanchez knocked one out and Torres knocked out two. Even Cameron Maybin got in on the action with his first homer, an opposite field shot, as a Yankee.

J.A. Happ had a very J.A. Happ-ish start. 5 and ⅓ innings with 3 Ks, 0 walks, and 5 hits. Were it not for the 2 home runs, it would have been great. The bullpen performed as it is supposed to. 3 ⅔ innings. 7 Ks, 0 walks 2 hits and no runs (ok, the 0 walks was a bit of an outlier).

Who’s Hot? The Sanchize hit his 12th homer and added a walk and a single. Torres hit 2 dingers to get up to 7. Let’s hope that this is a start of a streak for him.

Who’s Not? Brett Gardner went 0 for 4 and is now hitting .199/.292/.390. Ugh. Voit was 0 for 4 with 2 Ks and has come down to earth .228/.354/.455.

Why it Matters? The Yankees continue to show that they can do just enough to win with only 5 of the guys that are supposed to be starting. And the replacement Yankees (Maybin, Tauchman) are contributing just enough to outscore the dregs of Baseball..

Other Thoughts: Frazier started over #ReplacementLevel new Yankee Kendrys Morales. I’m not looking forward to seeing if Kendrys can do a fountain of youth at age 35.

Final Takeaway: To win the division, you need to split with the good teams and beat up on the bad ones.  Given the Yankees’ overall health, we need to be grateful for every win, even against the lowly Orioles.

Today’s Second Game: The Yankees will try to sweep the double header with Remaining Ace Domingo German (7-1, 2.70 ERA) against Andrew Cashner (4-1, 4.25 ERA).
