Your Perspectives - A Call?

By Paul Semendinger

December 13, 2024

***

Please, Mr. Postman? Mr. Telephone Man? Call Me?

Anyway...

This is a difficult article because I am just going to lay out a scenario and ask for the readers to think about it and comment honestly. I'm going to refrain from any commentary myself, rather I'd like to get our readers' opinions absent of them debating my take.

In this, I think it will be difficult for some people to look at this honestly. The battle lines on this issue were drawn weeks ago. I sense many will just double down. In our own perspectives, we see certain players as heroes and others as villians. Once that happens, it is difficult to look at something with those players objectively.

I'm hoping all can...

Weeks ago, Aaron Judge stated that he was not going to reach out to Juan Soto in his free agency. Yesterday, it came out that no Yankee did. Juan Soto didn't get a letter, a card, a text, an e-mail, or even a telegram from any former Yankee teammate as he determined what team he'd play for in 2025 and beyond.

It has also been reported that Soto did talk to some members of the Mets.

Did Aaron Judge (the Captain) and his teammates do the right thing by not reaching out?

I look forward to a good and honest discussion...

So if many of them spoke to Soto before the end of the season, why did no one reach out after the season? Maybe, based on those conversations, they didnt feel it would do any good. It wouild not necessarliy hurt his bargaining position, if he had said during the season that he loved playing with the Yankees and he hoped things would work out so he could come back. He always made it clear that he had no favorites. If that is what he conveyed to his teamates near the end, maybe they just felt that all they could do was just let it play out.

For sure someone should have reached out to Soto. Just the right thing to do… unless you flat out could not stand the guy. Seems very odd that no one did.

You're absolutely right about people doubling down on their initial takes about Soto. A few days we saw a comparison of Soto and Mike Trout's first even seasons and their contracts that ignored the fact that Trout was not a free agent when he signed his extension. That's a huge difference since the Angels did not have to bid against any other team. Trout's extension was also signed 5 years ago when the salary scale was a lot different than it is today.

In the past couple of days we've had comments about Soto being an "unhappy" person who keeps moving from team to team in search of something. Besides the amateur psychoanalysis based on nothing other than personal opinion and…
