Yanks Make Offer To Snell

by Paul Semendinger

January 11, 2024

***

I have been doubting the Yankees...

I have been critical of the Yankees...

It seems that I might be wrong about the Yankees.

John Heyman (in the NY Post) is reporting that the Yankees have made an offer to Blake Snell.

I hope this is a legitimate offer. I don't want to hear... "We gave a better deal with more money in the first years and an optout, blah, blah blah..." I want to hear, "The Yankees signed Blake Snell..."

I would LOVE to be wrong about the Yankees. I would LOVE for them to go all-in and get this pitcher. I've come around on Snell. I think he's the best available pitcher.

Blake Snell makes the 2024 Yankees better - appreciably better.

This would be what going all-in looks like. Soto and Snell. Yeah... now we're talking.

(I'd still like to be greedy - and get one more starter - Shane Bieber?)

But, let's see them get Snell first. A big step.

BIG HOPES!

I used some Beatles lyrics in a comment in a post earlier today. Here's some more lyrics:

"Don't let me down

Don't let me down, don't let me let down

Can you dig it? Don't let me down"

Snell has ONLY pitched at an elite level the year that he started discussing an extension with the rays and then again in his FA walk year. Unless his pay scale is on the line, he's a low effort pitcher.

Ken Rosenthal writes on The Athletic website: The Yankees are adding a starting pitcher. Sources briefed on the discussions indicate the team has reached an agreement with free-agent right-hander Marcus Stroman on a two-year deal worth $37 million, with a vesting option pending a physical. Stroman figures to be their last major offseason move.

Let's hope Mr. Sherman is correct.

Just saw this on ESPN: "and Snell wants to pitch for his hometown team (note: it's the Mariners) . He raised the 12th Man flag at a Seahawks game. He was at the college football national championship game in University of Washington gear. He grew up idolizing Ken Griffey Jr."

Well, it does take two to Tango, which may let out the Mariners...then, depending on whether you believe Sherman or Rosenthal after the Stroman agreement, the Yankees either are still looking for a partner or have left the dance floor...

hard to know what the leak about the offer to Snell means

other than meaning that the Yankees are quite serious

if there is truth to the rumor that they offered something in the area of $30M per.... it's entirely serious

Would the Yankees have been better with Cano?

I think I'll make this the Readers' Thread on Sunday...

Yes, the Yankees did in fact make Blake Snell an offer. Word is that the Yankees offer was $30M a year, 5 years deal, $150M total money. But Snell rejected it because he wants more money or one more year.

At least it's a start.

I also heard that the Yankees have had serious talks with the Chicago White Sox in regard to trading for Dylan Cease. What is holding up that deal is the White Sox insistance that the Yankees include Spencer Jones in that deal, and the Yankees are extremely reluctant to part with Jones.
