Yankees Top 60 Prospects

Yankees Top 60 Prospects

by James Vlietstra

February 11, 2022

***

In the past I have been hesitant to put out a Yankees top prospect list for a a couple of reasons. First and foremost I am not a professional talent evaluator. I also have not seen many of these players playing live in front of me. I do read a lot of analysis, but that doesn’t mean that I am qualified to voice my opinion.

However, one thing that I am very good at is numbers. So I have put together a point scale to take all subjective thoughts out of the process.

For each of the categories, the scale is weighted differently.

The categories that I took into account are age, proximity to the majors, ceiling, position, pedigree, and last year’s performance.

Age and proximity to majors are on a sliding scale. A teenager has more value than a 30 year old, much like a player on the 40-man roster does over a player in rookie ball.

For ceiling, there’s more of a steep curve. A player compared to Hall of Famers is more valuable than a guy who projects as a 26th man. Also, a player who is expected to stick at catcher or shortstop or a pitcher who throws with his left arm is going to score better than a guy who might just be a designated hitter.

Bonus points are given to first round picks and top international players. Simply put, at one point they were viewed by the front office as the best. That counts as something. The base skills, in short, are there.

Finally, someone that was injured last year will score lower than someone that was promoted from A Ball to AAA and excelled.

With all that as the background, here is my 2022 Yankees Preseason Top Prospect List.
