The Sunday Readers' Thread (Yankees Lineups)

Decmber 10, 2023

***

Let's hope the Yankees are not finished acquiring players and making this off-season exciting, fun, and encouraging. With that in mind, all of the following can change, but for now, the Yankees seem pretty set at each of the playing positions outside of pitcher.

Have some here and share what you believe, as of now, would be the best Yankees lineup (batting order) for 2024,

Here's my core lineup: DJL 3B Soto RF Judge CF Rizzo 1B Gleyber 2B Stanton DH Verdugo LF Trevino/Wells C Volpe SS I like Volpe batting ninth as opposed to the catchers as I subscribe to the "second leadoff hitter" theory that your #9 hitter should be able to run, and not clog up the bases for the big bashers, especially with the tendency to move the best hitters up to #2. Stanton is #6, and I could move him to #7 against certain righties, especially if Verdugo is hitting well. I'm fine with Stanton starting at #6 and giving the opportunity to hold the spot or even move up. The reality is that if he falls to #7 consistently due to poor performance, then it's likely time to…

I felt the same when I read that they were going with Volpe as the starting shortstop rather than Peraza. thought Volpe was a bit choppy, had a slightly inadequate arm.

watched him all season and he didn't really change my mind about those things, but I had to admit that he managed to get the job done.

saw that they voted him a gold glove, and didn't quite believe it, but had to admit that he got good results.

watched him hit all season, and didn't like what he was doing.

he continued to act as though he was a power hitter, looking to drive high pitches, clearing his front leg and hip early.

ridiculous conceit for a little…

I think both Verdugo & Volpe will get looks again in the leadoff spot down in Florida. Remember, Volpe won the SS job hitting leadoff all of Spring last year except, I believe for one game. Both Rizzo & Torres have proven they are up to the challenge of hitting behind Judge. I also think the catching job will be a shared job, but because Wells is a lefty-swinger, and most SPs are righties, I see Wells getting about 60% of the time behind the dish. I also am a realist, so my one concession is that Stanton will be the DH, hitting 4th or 5th, for at least the first month of the season, My lineup:

I had hoped for a better center field solution, but Cashman took the cheap route. I suppose Verdugo will be adequate.

Third base is still a hole. I am not crazy about either DJ or Peraza at third. The Reds seem to have a surplus of infielders, even after moving De La Cruz to the outfield. They just signed third baseman Jeimer Candelario in free agency. I would not want Jonathan India, but Noelvi Marte now seems to be blocked at third. He is their top prospect, so his acquisition would cut even deeper into the Yankee farm, but he would be a great pickup if he could be pried away. I don't know if the Reds would even …
