Rickey learned how to be the great base stealer he had been from Davey Lopes. Unlike Rickey, Davey Lopes was NOT blessed with great speed. Yet, he still amassed very high stolen base totals anyway. He did so, because he was a master at studying pitchers and their moves and their tendencies, and Lopes would masterfully know the exact second to start his steal. He was almost always correct and he was near impossible to get thrown out at second. When Davey Lopes left the Dodgers and became Rickey's teammate with the Oakland A's, he shared his uncanny knack for studying pitchers and knowing the exact moment to run with Rickey who DID have blazing speed! The DH today - with all the rest/sleep studies and the analytics about the pros/cons about playing 162 games, with the DH you get to keep a guy in the lineup, and get to keep a bench player some playing time.


Rickey came here before the 1985 season. My favorite Rickey story as a Yankee, for me was that day that Summer of 1985, Rickey asked Billy (Martin) for the day off, and after Winfield saw that he wasn't in the lineup that day and tells Rickey 'we don't take days off'.
