Sunday Readers' Thread: Movie Quotes

December 8, 2024

***

This idea came up in an article by Tim Kabel last week where we were asked to remember famous movie quotes.

Today, please share your favorite quotes from baseball movies.

BUT PLEASE DO NOT make this a space to tell others that you dislike the movies they enjoy. Please leave those negative opinions to yourself. Thanks!

ENJOY!

“But today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth”

Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig in “Pride of the Yankees”. Still gets me every time.

And delivered so powerfully by Gary Cooper. Thats why it doesn’t matter if it is a recreation of an actual event. Me, you, or a million other people can repeat those words and folks would say “oh, that’s nice”. But the way its presented in the film delivers a home run every time.

Me thinks I'm gonna have to watch the original Angels in the Outfield (1951) or For the Love of the Game (1999) to get it right, but here are 2 of them:

From Love of the Game: The Late, Great Vince Scully: The Cathedral that is Yankee Stadium belongs to a Chapel

From Love of the Game: This one wasn't spoken, but rather written on the baseball that Chapel had sent up to the owner's box: Tell them I'm through

I first watched the original Angels in the Outfield when I was sick and about 11 years old (1979ish). I actually have it currently on my DVR. I couldn't stand the stupid Disney remake.

"Scattering The Ashes has all the feels. Paul Russell Semendinger's debut novel taps into every emotion. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll reexamine those relationships that give your life meaning." — Don Burke, writer at The New York Post

"This charming and meticulously researched book will remind you of baseball’s power to change and enrich lives far beyond the diamond."

—Jonathan Eig, New York Times best-selling author of Luckiest Man, Opening Day, and Ali: A Life

From Compton to the Bronx.jpg

"A young man from Compton rises to the highest levels of baseball greatness.

Considered one of the classiest baseball players ever, this is Roy White's story, but it's also the story of a unique period in baseball history when the Yankees fell from grace and regained glory and the country dealt with societal changes in many ways."
