SSTN Top Prospects: Unranked (2 of 2)

James Vliestra assembles and analyses all of the top Yankees prospect names to know! Today we feature a few more unranked names.

Grant Richardson (OF):

Age (As of 4/1/23): 23.7 Years Old

Height/Weight: 6'2" & 210 Pounds

Acquired: Drafted in the 17th Round of the 2021 MLB First Year Player Draft

Rule 5 Eligible: December, 2024

2022 Review:

Last year in 90 games between Tampa and Hudson Valley he hit 16 homers and stole 16 bases to go along with his .769 OPS.

2023 Preview:

Richardson was teammates with another Yankees prospect, Elijah Dunham (more on him later in this series) for 2 years at Indiana University, though they have yet to play together in the minors. I expect Richardson to begin the year in Hudson Valley and should get promoted around the trade deadline once all the moving parts settle into place.

2023 Preseason Cross-Publication Prospect Rankings:

Analysis of Rankings:

Someone always tries to be smarter than everyone else, and while Rosario may be talented, he's not a top 20 prospect in this system.

Madison Santos (OF):

Age (As of 4/1/23): 23.5 Years Old

Height/Weight: 5'10" & 165 Pounds

Acquired: Signed as an International Free Agent in 2018

Rule 5 Eligible: December, 2023

2022 Review:

Santos played all over the outfield for Tampa last year, however his OPS from the previous year plummeted from .945 to .671. In almost 100 games over 2 seasons in Tampa his OPS is a mere .675.

2023 Preview:

Typically prospects are advanced to the next level once they have conquered the previous. However, for Santos, his striking out 110 times in 235 at bats is troubling. He should be returned to Tampa for a third season and if he's still unable to figure it out he could find himself released prior to the draft.

Marcos Cabrera (3B):

Age (As of 4/1/23): 21.64 Years Old

Height/Weight: 6'3" & 190 Pounds

Acquired: Signed as an International Free Agent in 2018

Rule 5 Eligible: December, 2023

2022 Review:

In his first taste of full season ball, Cabrera struggled in Tampa last year. He slashed only .196/.300/.359/.659. While considerations can be made with the jump to full-season ball, his 2022 OPS was 160 points lower than his career OPS.

2023 Preview:

As with many of the Yankees prospects in the lower minors, Cabrera is another candidate to return to Tampa to attempt to find a comfort zone before advancing further.

Harold Cortijo (RHP):

Age (As of 4/1/23): 24.5 Years Old

Height/Weight: 6'2" & 180 Pounds

Acquired: Drafted in the 14th Round of the 2017 MLB First Year Player Draft

Rule 5 Eligible: December, 2023

2022 Review:

The pandemic and injuries robbed him of a lot of developmental time as Cortijo only pitched 12.1 professional innings between 2020-21. Though last year he threw 59 innings while mostly in Tampa. On his stat lines, nothing stands out spectacularly on the good or bad end.

2023 Preview:

Now that the rust is gone, it will be interesting to see what Cortijo can do in a full year at Hudson Valley. Given his older age, it makes sense for the Yankees to rush him a bit this season up the lower minors to see how he plays.

Cashman doesn't run prodpects through the system. The only 2 i know of since 2008 are Luis Severino in 2015 & Deivi Garcia in 2019. Sevy made it to the majors and despite Deivi making AAA at the ASB, control issues and injury stalled him that year.

"A young man from Compton rises to the highest levels of baseball greatness.

Considered one of the classiest baseball players ever, this is Roy White's story, but it's also the story of a unique period in baseball history when the Yankees fell from grace and regained glory and the country dealt with societal changes in many ways."
