James Vliestra assembles and analyses all of the top Yankees prospect names to know! Today we feature ranks #75-71.
Ryder Green (OF):
Age (As of 4/1/23): 22.9 Years Old
Height/Weight: 6'0" & 200 Pounds
Acquired: Drafted in the 3rd Round of the 2018 MLB First Year Player Draft for $998K
Rule 5 Eligible: December, 2023
2022 Review:
Last year, Green only suited up for six games before an undisclosed injury sidelined him for the rest of the year.
2023 Preview:
I'm assuming that he has recovered from the injury, but at this point he has only played 57 games in the past 42 months. He will probably be looking at Tampa as his starting point. I'd love to see him accelerate and return to his spot as a top 30 prospect, but he's lost a lot of developmental time. He will need to show the Yankees hierarchy something or else possibly be at risk of being released prior to the June draft when the next influx of players arrives.
2023 Preseason Cross-Publication Prospect Rankings:
Analysis of Rankings:
While Green has seen himself on many other prospect lists in the past, he did not find himself on any other radars going into this season.
Chase Hampton (RHP):
Age (As of 4/1/23): 21.6 Years Old
Height/Weight: 6'2" & 225 Pounds
Acquired: Drafted in the 6th Round of the 2022 MLB First Year Player Draft for $497K
Rule 5 Eligible: December, 2025
2022 Review:
Though he was drafted this past summer, Hampton has yet to make his professional debut. He threw 56.2 innings at Texas Tech last spring before being drafted and struck out 72 batters for a 11.4 K/9 rate.
2023 Preview:
Coming out of college ball, Hampton will clear the lower levels of the minor leagues for his first showing in professional ball. He should and will likely spend the entire season in Tampa.
2023 Preseason Cross-Publication Prospect Rankings:
Analysis of Rankings:
His lack of a professional appearance likely kept him from cracking any other lists besides the MLB Pipeline and Fangraphs- both of whom always seem to value college experience. He could be a break-out candidate to rise quickly through the farm system.
Zach Messinger (RHP):
Age (As of 4/1/23): 23.4 Years Old
Height/Weight: 6'6" & 225 Pounds
Acquired: Drafted in the 13th Round of the 2021 MLB First Year Player Draft for $225K
Rule 5 Eligible: December, 2024
2022 Review:
Messinger pitched 83.2 innings in Tampa last year as both a starter and reliever. He struck out 112 batters for a 12.0K/9 rate.
2023 Preview:
Messinger is another pitching prospect with years of college experience. After his first solid professional season, he should continue to advance up the system. Next stop Hudson Valley!
2023 Preseason Cross-Publication Prospect Rankings:
Analysis of Rankings:
Another member on just our list and the MLB Pipeline, Messinger has been overlooked so far. He has the stuff, but he really needs to work on his control.
Christopher Familia (OF):
Age (As of 4/1/23): 22.8 Years Old
Height/Weight: 5'11" & 170 Pounds
Acquired: Signed as an International Free Agent in 2018
Rule 5 Eligible: December, 2023
2022 Review:
Familia started his year dominating in the FCL before being promoted to Tampa late in the season. His slash line was a respectable .242/.364/.458/.822. Definitely room to improve but a nice base to work from.
2023 Preview:
He should return to his familiar spot in left field at GMS Field in Tampa. Let's look for solid improvement as he develops.
2023 Preseason Cross-Publication Prospect Rankings:
Analysis of Rankings:
Familia is mostly off the radar, but did make a back-end appearance for ESPN.
Carlos Lagrange (RHP):
Age (As of 4/1/23): 19.8 Years Old
Height/Weight: 6'7" & 195 Pounds
Acquired: Signed as an International Free Agent in 2022 for $10K
Rule 5 Eligible: December, 2026
2022 Review:
Lagrange threw 33 innings in the DSL with a K-rate of 11.7/9. He also managed a WHIP of 0.879 despite walking 5.2/9 thanks to his minuscule 2.7 hits/9.
2023 Preview:
As a 20 year old he's a good candidate to come stateside to see what he can do in the FCL. Working on his control will be his top priority.
2023 Preseason Cross-Publication Prospect Rankings:
Analysis of Rankings:
Lagrange is a bit of a hidden gem in the organization whose pedigree is suppressed by his young age, his small signing bonus (and thus small international mark as a free agent), and his being low in the system.
