James Vliestra assembles and analyses all of the top Yankees prospect names to know! Today we feature ranks #40-36!
Anthony Hall (OF):
Age (As of 4/1/23): 22.1 Years Old
Height/Weight: 6'2" & 200 Pounds
Acquired: Drafted in the 4th Round of the 2022 MLB First Year Player Draft for $456K
Rule 5 Eligible: December, 2025
2022 Review:
Last year, Hall starred for the Oregon Ducks before being drafted by the Yankees. The right fielder had a slash line of .333/.402/.640/1.042. He also had a brief one at bat cameo in the FCL just to dip his foot in the water of professional baseball.
2023 Preview:
It'll be interesting to see how the Yankees view Hall. There's a chance he'll start the year in Tampa or he could be held back in extended spring training. Either way, as a proven college bat he should move quickly.
2023 Preseason Cross-Publication Prospect Rankings:
Analysis of Rankings:
His rankings run the gamut from Top-20 to Top-50. This season should bring some clarity after a good .
Jared Serna (2B):
Age (As of 4/1/23): 20.8 Years Old
Height/Weight: 5'8" & 170 Pounds
Acquired: Signed as an International Free Agent in 2019
Rule 5 Eligible: December, 2023
2022 Review:
Serna was promoted to Tampa during the 2022 season. Combined with his stats in the FCL he had an OPS of .855. A solid hitter, he has a knack for scoring runs, amassing 46 in 49 games.
2023 Preview:
He should return to Tampa for the start of the 2023 season. It'll be interesting to see how he develops with more experience. He's only played 99 games in his two years as a professional so far.
2023 Preseason Cross-Publication Prospect Rankings:
Analysis of Rankings:
There's 2 outrageously high rankings for Serna and then over 3 remaining lists they have him around the 30 to 40 mark. He'll be someone to keep a radar on this year.
Fidel Montero (OF):
Age (As of 4/1/23): 19.2 Years Old
Height/Weight: 6'0" & 180 Pounds
Acquired: Signed as an International Free Agent in 2021 for $450K
Rule 5 Eligible: December, 2025
2022 Review:
Last year in the DSL he managed only an OPS of .632, dragged down by a .154 batting average. Though over 56 games he did have 48 walks, 41 runs scored and 40 stolen bases.
2023 Preview:
I'm guessing he will come stateside, where they will work on his pitch recognition and maybe his bunting. If he's able to raise his average 60-70 points he could develop into a Henderson-type lead off batter, causing chaos with his speed.
2023 Preseason Cross-Publication Prospect Rankings:
Analysis of Rankings:
Montero's lack of hitting for average kept his name down, but he was a hot international prospect just 2 years ago. Give him time, he's not nearly worth giving up on yet.
Matt Krook (LHP):
Age (As of 4/1/23): 28.4 Years Old
Height/Weight: 6'4" & 225 Pounds
Acquired: Taken from the Tampa Bay Rays during the Minor League Rule-5 Draft in 2020
Rule 5 Eligible: Currently on the Yankees 40-Man Roster
2022 Review:
Krook pitched 138.2 innings for Scranton last year. None of his numbers were particularly overwhelming, but the Yankees liked enough of what they saw to add him to their 40-man roster before he became a minor league free agent.
2023 Preview:
I expect him to be stretched out as a starter for the RailRiders to start the year. However if his services are required at the Major League level, it will likely be as a mop up reliever.
2023 Preseason Cross-Publication Prospect Rankings:
Analysis of Rankings:
Perhaps Krook is not exactly a prospect because of his age, but he is a former first round pick (from 2013) and he is on the 40-man roster. He's likely to be someone who could make an impact in the majors this season.
Carson Coleman (RHP):
Age (As of 4/1/23): 24.9 Years Old
Height/Weight: 6'2" & 190 Pounds
Acquired: Signed as an Undrafted Free Agent after the 2020 MLB First Year Player Draft
Rule 5 Eligible: December, 2023
2022 Review:
Coleman was signed after the abbreviated 5 round draft in 2020. In 2021, he clearly had rust from only pitching 6 games in the prior year. But, in 2022, he came on strong. Between Hudson Valley and Somerset he threw 63.1 innings with a 2.13 ERA, 0.884 WHIP, 13.5 K/9, 2.7 BB/9, and 5.0 K/BB.
2023 Preview:
Coming into 2023, Coleman is in position to start the season in Scranton and could be an option to be promoted to the MLB by Memorial Day, if needed.
2023 Preseason Cross-Publication Prospect Rankings:
Analysis of Rankings:
Coleman is a consistently ranked prospect between the 25-35 range across many publications. He's a known commodity.
