Readers' Thread: Soto Contract

May 19, 2024

***

It seems that Juan Soto, his agent, and the Yankees are willing to work on a new contract during this season before he reaches free agency.

If you ran the Yankees, what would your best offer to Soto be?

I like $50m X 10 ($50 AAV) with no opt-outs and no deferrals and signed through the age 36 season. However, I believe this could be the contract that gets it done - $702.8 X 14 ($50 AAV) with no opt-outs and no deferrals with signing through the age 40 season. I think this would appeal to Soto and Boras as it beats Ohtani's $701 and $46m AAV after deferrals. The best number for the Yankees is $650 X 13 ($50 AAV).

Signing Soto also means letting go of Holmes, Rizzo, Verdugo, and Torres and trade of Grisham for prospect saving approximately $55m in payroll. Judge in LF, Dominguez in CF, and Soto In RF. Puts Pereira as 4th OF'e…

Ohtani’s overall is out of reach for AAV and total $ value. He may go for something that exceeds it in “real” current dollars. Will likely want something to extend for the rest of his career but with opt outs. Will want it front loaded until those opt outs pass. The Yanks will want some late years’ money deferred to gain some payroll flexibility in the declining years.

A possible structure:

3 years at $62mm per. Then an opt out.

3 years at $57mm. Then the second opt out.

3 years at $48mm. 3mm annually is deferred.

2years at $ 44mm. 4mm annually deferred.

2 years at $38mm. 4mm annually deferred.

That’s 13 years for a total face value of…

Twelve Years, $50 million per year, $600 million over the contract are nice round and high numbers.

Will get the conversation started for sure. Curious to see your take on the nuances. When the numbers get this big, it generally isn’t a straight $/years deal. Please see my post for some thoughts. Would like to see your take.
