Readers' Thread: Pick One

January 5, 2024

***

For this discussion, assume that the Yankees have determined that they need a third baseman and that they have only two options, Nolan Arenado and Alex Bregman.

If you were the General Mangager and you had to choose one of the two, which player would you acquire, and why?

the discussion question was given due consideration

and, after pondering which 30+ year old 3B would be more likely to repay which $20+M per season investment

it might be time to consider which 20+ year old 2B would be more likely to repay which $10M+ per season investment.

Of the two, I like Arenado due to the shorter commitment and his defense. A couple seasons ago he was a top-five MVP candidate. I'm cautiously optimistic that he has something left in the tank.

Arenado …shorter contract, better D, adequate offense with possible rebound…Bregman …wants to many years, YS not a fit for his bat, and he has the Astro baggage…just a pass on him!

Arenado is locked in for 3 years at 24 million per

If we could have either player for that contract, I probably lean to Bregman. i believe he will be hurt by leaving the crawford boxes behind him, except if he goes to boston. but i think he is probably a talented enough hitter to adjust. if he came to YS it means more doubles in LC and more hitting to RF

i dont believe Bregman will be valuable for much more than 3 years. this is a good player who had a couple elite years who is already on the way down, but if contracts were the same, i would take him

why? because for the ONE year o…

Arenado comes with fewer years.

I'd take Bregman, but I'd prefer the shorter Arenado contract. His glove will also improve the defense and possibly give the Yankees the best defensive infield which will translate to wins.
