Ethan and his girlfriend spent the other day in the city. They visited a whole bunch of sites: The Museum of Ice Cream, Bryant Park, The Sugar Factory, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, and more.
They also went to a candy store and found... A REGGIE BAR and brought one home for me.
The first time I had a Reggie Bar was when they first came out, in 1978. I thought they were delicious. I was ten. It was candy. What wasn't to like?
Reggie Bars soon went away. But, in the early 1990s, around the time when Reggie went into the Hall of Fame, I recall they made a comeback. I remember getting a few. I enjoyed them again: chocolate, peanuts, and caramel. Again, what wasn't to like?
Yesterday, when I opened my new Reggie Bar, my first in probably three decades, I wondered if they were still delicious.
They are!
(I'm not a food critic. My favorite food is pizza. I don't go to many fancy restaurants. I have pretty simple tastes. I like what I like. And the Reggie Bar, made up of chocolate, peanuts, and caramel, for me is still a delicious treat.)
Fun fact: Reggie homered off Wilbur Wood on opening day of 1978. Remember the 3rd home run Reggie hit was off Charlie Hough in game 6 of the 1977 world series. Both were homers were hit off knuckleballs. Reggie I think was good at hitting of knuckleball pitchers in his career.
Baby Ruth....GUM?????

I always thought they should have named a Hot Dog after him!!
They were very good. I think I've told the story before that I was at Opening Day in 1978 (the first home game after World Series Game 6, when Reggie hit the three homers), and they were giving away Reggie Bars as a promotion. First time up, Reggie homers again. And the Reggie Bars start flying on to the field, causing a delay while the grounds crew cleaned it up. But I'd already eaten mine and my Mom's, though I don't think I would have dared to throw something on to the field with her sitting next to me. It might not have reached anyway, given where we were sitting in the back of the lower deck, and my 15-yea…
So they're still making them? I hope what they sold Ethan wasn't some leftover relic from the 70's or even the 90s!
