Amazing how different a team can look and play in the absence of a great manager. I'm not quite sure Dusty would have opened up 0-4. Their loss, NYY gain. Joe Espada honeymoon ended in 4 days, Houston fans already putting on the heat.

Last year, with Dusty Baker still at the helm, the Astros didn't play that well. They did make it to the post season, and they did finish in first place, but they regressed considerably last year since winning the World Series against Philadelphia. If the Astros were in the tougher AL East, they probably would have had a similar record to the record the Yankees had last season. They didn't dominate the teams they had dominated in previous seasons before last season. A flawed Yankee team with a lot of newly called up minor league prospects swept the Astros last season in a 3 game series.

Juan Soto makes other hitters in the lineup better because they observe first-hand the way he won't swing at borderline pitches out of the strike zone, and the way he forces opposing pitchers to throw a lot of additional pitches, thus bringing up their pitch count to the point of that pitcher receiving an early exit. Players like Oswaldo Cabrera, for example (and others) are taking notice and adopting this into their games as well. Soto's presence and his love of playing baseball, and his overall personality is bringing out the best in all of his teammates. That is why he is going to be worth every penny of whatever it is going to take for the Yankees to out…

Berti positioned himself well to get that ball in the 9th. The ball would have to beat him to the spot, but still leave no room on his own between himself and the foul line. Also RBI hit too. Took over Volpe's spot in the lineup, and came through.

As for Clarke Schmidt, I'm sick n tired of hearing hid problems past the 5th inning, or 75 pitches. Stuff only gets you so far. No. 36 is my 1st, 2nd, & 3rd example of why pitch usage needs to be secondary during the game to pitch usage. Where was just a show me pitch the 3td time through, or even the first time too? I didn't see too much up…

there's been significant debate about whether Schmidt is better suited to a multi-inning relief role

rather than being utilized as a starter

I've got some idea that the Yankees might be well-served by adding more starting pitching

and moving both Schmidt and Cortes

Torres deserves some praise for his base-running today

he scored twice because twice he took an extra base

He will have 4-5 fielding lapses and another 4-5 base running, head-scratching plays a year, but otherwise he is a very good player as long as he is not at SS.

Soto is a heckuva hitter

and the offense looks good

despite Stanton looking bad

and Judge mostly just looking on

But this series, we had Mr. smiles, aka Oswaldo Cabrera!
