Quick Hit: Defense Kills

Rizzo didn't pick one, Volpe didn't throw one, Torres didn't glove one...and the Yankees lose 8-7 in 10 innings.

TOTALLY UNRELATED TOPIC: I couldn't resist pointing this out. Derek Jeter and Kobe Bryant had TWIN CAREERS! This blew me away!

I came across this article about Red Sox reliever Kenley Jansen's complaint that the baseballs are slick this year and are hard to control, especially in the colder weather, and I am wondering, maybe THIS is the reason for the Yankees defensive problems right now (It was not so much an issue when the Yankees played under the roof in the warmer climates in Arizona and Houston). Especially with a guy like Anthony Rizzo who is NORMALLY a very good defensive First Baseman. Could the slicker baseballs be the culprit? Good point about Rizzo. It may be wise for him to have a physical examination to determine if he is still suffering any lingering effects from that, that could still be hampering his play, offensively and defensively. In fact, I think every player on the team should undergo a complete physical examination once or twice a week to determine whether or not they are dealing with a physical problem that the player may not be reporting.

The arm problems, from what I am gathering now, are due to every team's emphasis on velocity and spin rates....instead of simply "pitching" (locating, changing speeds, mixing pitches, etc). Pitchers are throwing harder than they should and putting extra spin on the ball an…

Awful defense is starting to catch up with the team. Gleyber & Rizzo have both been atrocious.

Besides defense, it was also the lack of a reliable reliever after Clay Holmes. The defensive failures from earlier in the game would not have been a factor if the bullpen were at least able to hold that 2 run lead.

Caleb Durbin (AAA) and Benjamin Cowles (AA) are off to hot starts. But both Ben Rice & TJ Rumfield have been stalled in AA because of Cashman's need to fill the Triple A infield with minor league vets, even to the point Durbin is playing LF, CF, & DH in SWB. DJ might be needed for 1B. Player development stinks. No real help coming outside of DJ! Disgusting IMO.
