Questions 67 & 68...

by Paul Semendinger

October 28, 2024

***

Well, it is clear that I made the correct choice going to see the Chicago concert on Saturday night and missing the Yankees game.

As the Yankees prepare for the three home games beginning tonight, I have the following thoughts:

Alive Again - The Yankees were down 0-2 in 1978 and 1996, they came back and won the World Series those years. It can be done. (Please don't remind me about 1981.)

Baby, What A Big Surprise - I am surprised that Aaron Judge has been this bad throughout the playoffs. In 40 at bats, he has struck out 19 times. He's been awful. There is no other word for it. (And yes, I hope, desperately, that he changes that story beginning tonight.)

Beginnings - I hope tonight is the beginning of a Yankee turn around. They need to now win four of the remaining five games.

Chasing the Wind - The Yankees have struck out 20 times over the first two World Series games.

Dialogue (Part I and II) - There will be a lot of talk about bringing back Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman if the Yankees get swept in the World Series.

Feeling Stronger Everyday - If the Yankees can win Game Three, maybe they can turn this thing around and start to roll.

Gone Long Gone - Is the optimism that surrounded this Yankees team.

If You Leave Me Now - If the Yankees lose the World Series, will Juan Soto stay with the team?

Look Away - It has been difficult to watch the Yankees very poor results with runners on base. That has to change. That has been a problem throughout the playoffs.

Love Me Tomorrow - I have said that the Yankees reached the World Series. It has been a difficult series so far, but I do think they deserve credit for getting to this point. I'll still love them tomorrow. (But, I'll think twice about getting Season Tickets if they do not re-sign Juan Soto.)

Make Me Smile - By winning four of the next five games, or better yet, by winning the next four.

Must Have Been Crazy - To believe, or hope, that the Yankees were a match for the Dodgers.

Old Days - I remember the old days when the Yankees used to win the World Series on a regular basis.

Questions 67 & 68 - This is a big "If," but if Aaron Judge doesn't hit this postseason, will so many continue to make excuses for him?

Saturday in the Park - Maybe, there can be a Saturday night in Dodgers Stadium...

(I've Been) Searching So Long - For a World Championship...

What You're Missing - For Carlos Rodon on Saturday, he wasn't missing very many bats.

You're The Inspiration - Giancarlo Stanton has certainly inspired the team and the fans.

25 or 6 to 4 - I hope the Yankees score 25 runs tonight, but if they win 6-4, I'll be satisified.

Let's Go Yankees!

You forgot the other reference to "25 or 6 to 4," which is the Bet365 odds that the Yankees win the World Series at this point.

"the Yankees very poor results with runners on base. . . . That has been a problem throughout the playoffs."

It's been a problem since June. I keep pointing it out, and I keep hearing back "Oh, they keep putting runners on base," or "Oh, they still average 5 runs a game," or "Oh, they're still in first place/have the best record in the league." And my response every time is, "This is not going to fly in the post-season." And here we are, nose-diving into the ground. 2-for-14 RISP, 5 Runs across two games.

Oh, and Austin Wells is outpacing Aaron "Mr. May" Judge by 28 OPS points.

I'm personally tired of Judge playing like Mr. May (and I trust you do understand the reference to Steinbrenner and Winfield in the 1981 World Series; Winfield also had a really good regular season, team-leading OPS+, good for 7th in the MVP voting). The point is not that Judge was the MVP of the AL during the regular season; the point is that he's hitting like Austin Wells in the post-season. I haven't seen choking like this since the last time Mama Cass picked up a chicken sandwich.

The 1956 and 1958 Yankees also lost the first two games of the WS and went on to win. Of course Mickey, Whitey and Yogi don't work here any more.

Without question, going to a concert of a band one enjoys is FAR MORE fun and exciting than watching ones favorite team lose a World Series game. But watching ones favorite team WIN a World Series game is more exciting than seeing the concert. With the way things turned out, you made the right choice.

"The Yankees were down 0-2 in 1978 and 1996, they came back and won the World Series those years"

The Yankees are actually BETTER OFF now, in their current 0-2 state in this World Series than they were in the 1996 World Series. In THAT one, the 0-2 occurred at HOME, and then they had to play the next 3 games in Atlanta. If …

BUT, we are also now going to see the Dodgers #3 and #4 pitching options. I think their #4 pitching option will probably be one of those "bullpen games". Also, their #3 and #4 pitching options are the ones who have to pitch in "enemy territory" in front of a hostile New York crowd rooting against them, instead of their top two (Flaherty and Yamamoto). Also, Flaherty seems to pitch better at Dodger Stadium than he does in New York, as evidenced by how different he was in the NLCS pitching in New York in Game 5 than he was, pitching at Dodger Stadium in Game 1.

I like Clarke Schmidt's and Luis Gil's chances much better than the chances…
