A few weeks ago, a Yankees fan shared the following photo with me.
The photo is striking in its simplicity but when one looks deeper, there's so much more.
I might come back to this and share my thoughts about the photo in a future article, but for today, I think the picture itself says enough.
What are your thoughts and/or remembrances when you see this photo?
No Game Thread tonight? I hope Phil is ok.
Wow, only 2 uniform numbers greater than 30.
I remember YS1 very well. Spent many days in the upper deck GA seats. Saw Mantle, Maris, Ford, Tresh, Howard, Kubek, in the last years of the Stengel-Houk dynasty. Suffered through the Horace Clarke (actually better than Richardson), Dooley Womack years. Saw Murcer hit 4 HR in a double header, Saw Joe D hit a frozen rope double down the LF line and Billy Martin hit an inside-the-park HR in an Old Timers Day game. I saw Munson-Michael-Murcer hit back-to-back-to-back HRs in a game against the A's in 1969 (Munson's first MLB HR).
Got then White Sox pitcher Rich Gossage's autograph on one occasion when my Dad got field box sears. Saw Dick Allen and his bowling ball shoulders swinging a…
I remember walking out of the Stadium with my parents, who had taken me to the game. We didn't try to run on the field or anything (as many others did) The external doors out by the right-field bullpen were open, and I noticed a clump of dirt and grass sitting there on the concrete (probably dropped by someone who'd taken a larger patch from the field). I picked it up and convinced my parents to let me take this souvenir home. It sat forlornly in a small flower pot for years before it was disposed of.
Oh, and No. 50, the catcher? That was Duke Sims, with Munson getting the last game of the season off. Probably not lo…
Some quick thoughts: No Betting in Stadium. That's pretty much a joke today. There's no safe place where you cannot bet. Second: The obligatory Marlboro advertising. Last: I remember when the Yankees announced they would have an electric scoreboard to replace the had operated scoreboard (see the umpire assignments in the top upper right). I couldn't wait for Opening Day to see the electronic scoreboard. Those were the days.
