Monday Readers' Thread: A BIG Trade

by SSTN Admin

December 25, 2023

***

Our Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Semendinger, suggested the following trade as an idea on the Bronx Beat Podcast. (Dr. Sem usually doesn't suggest trades, but this came up as part of the conversation.)

Reader Gomer Pyle suggested we put this trade out to all fans to see their thoughts and reactions...

If you ran the Yankees, would you make the following trade? Why or why not?

Yankees Get:

  • Luis Robert, Jr

  • Dylan Cease

  • Yoan Moncada

White Sox Get:

  • Anthony Volpe

  • Jasson Dominguez

ENJOY!

I'm not sold on Robert as an elite player. He's also been healthy only one season. Cease has had one good year and is coming off a pretty bad one Moncada has slashed .246/.326/.397 the past three years. No thank you.

Interesting question...

Is it worth going "all-in" on 2024 and then having mediocre years or is it better to keep building for the future?

First, with the Yankees, I believe any limitation is self-imposed. They can afford to go all-in every year - and that's what I'd prefer, but...

Given the choice.

For most of the last 15 years, I probably would have said to build a solid foundation and build around it to be a champion. That's what the Yankees have been supposedly trying to do.

It hasn't worked. There hasn't been a flag since 2009.

So, with that option, today, for 2024... I say go all-in. Play big. Try to win big.

I'd make this trade. I'd mak…

Replying to

OF COURSE, I was exaggerating

sometimes I find it necessary, as an aid to being understood, to paint in the broadest of strokes.

I'm not over-esteeming Snell, blog. I'm simply comparing his achievements to the more modest ones of Cease.

whether Snell is much more desirable ...or whether the two pitchers are equally adept and likely to be of roughly equal value for the 2024 season

it should be readily understandable that, for a team deep in cash and earnestly desirous of adding talent, it's far preferable to spend the cash and retain the best young players already on the team.

retain the best prospects and expend the bucks for a starting pitcher.

spend the second tier of prospects in…

No..... Yankees won't give up on either player now if Volpe doesn't improve I could see him traded after 2024 season and Dominguez still needs some seasoning especially coming off an injury. Yankees hold onto both because trade value is low right now.
