In what took about a month to formulate, record, calculate, and report, my analysis tool The Determinator concluded this past Monday with the announcement of the Top-5 Designated Hitters in the MLB.
It was a long process of trying to create and justify my own metric of metrics, which was very hard to do in some circumstances (CF), yet in others seemed to be pretty close to what I expected (1B). However, more often than not a few players per position stuck out as surprising to have either made or not made the list.
As this was inspired greatly by the yearly lists from MLB Network’s The Shredder, and in an effort to provide an easy to see view between my tool and theirs, continuing from yesterday and over the next 7 weekdays, I’ll be releasing a side-by-side comparison of the two.
Today we continue with our second list: First Basemen
The Shredder vs. The Determinator:
The Shredder, from MLB Network’s Top 10: First Base
The Determinator, from SSTN’s Top 10: First Base
Key Notes:
The Shredder and The Determinator differed on including 3 different first basemen to each list, of which the omissions per list were:
The Shredder:
Christian Walker (ARZ)
Yuli Gurriel (HOU)
Rhys Hoskins (PHI)
The Determinator:
Max Muncy (LAD)
Luke Voit (NYY)
Edwin Encarnacion (CWS)
Between players that made each list, two players stayed the same in placement:
Freddie Freeman (#1, ATL)
Paul Goldschimdt (#5, STL)
From that, here are the noticeable changes of player rankings from The Shredder to The Determinator:
Pete Alonso (#3 -> #6, NYM)
Anthony Rizzo (#4 -> #2, CHC)
Matt Olson (#6 -> #4, OAK)
Carlos Santana (#8 -> #3, CLE)
Josh Bell (#9 -> #7, PIT)
