King Sized Cup of Coffee Yankees (Pt. 1): 1980-2023

by Paul Semendinger

***

Over the last few weeks, we have created some fun lists of players by positions...

Here's my latest - a list of long time Major Leaguers All-Stars (or at least big time names) who were Yankees, but who are not, necessarily, remembered for being Yankees.

For this list, I'll keep it to players I saw play (1980 to present).

King Sized Cup of Coffee Yankees:

C- Ivan Rodriguez (Hall-of-Fame) - Played in 33 games in 2008

1B- Lance Berkman (6 time All-Star) - Played in 37 games in 2010

2B- Bert Campaneris (6 time All-Star) - Played in 60 games in 1983

SS- Tony Fernandez (5 time All-Star) - Played in 108 games in 1995

3B- Kevin Youkilis (3 time All-Star) - Played in 28 games in 2013

LF- Jose Cruz (2 time All-Star) - Played in 38 games in 1988

CF- Andrew McCutchen (2013 MVP) - Played in 25 games in 2018

RF- Jose Canseco (1988 MVP) - Played in 37 games in 2000

DH- Henry Rodriguez (1 time All-Star) - Played 5 games in 2001

Bench- Troy Tulowitzki (5 time All-Star) - Played in 5 games in 2019

Edwin Encarnacion (2 time All-Star) - Played in 44 games in 2019

Henry Rodriguez (1 time All-Star) - Played in 5 games in 2001

Richie Sexton (2 time All-Star) - Played in 22 games in 2008

SP- Frank Tanana (3 time All-Star) - Pitched in 3 games in 1993

Gaylord Perry (Hall-of-Fame) - Pitched in 10 games in 1980

Corey Kluber (3 time All-Star) - Pitched in 16 games in 2021

Lance Lynn (2 time All-Star) - Pitched in 11 games in 2018

RP- Lee Smith (Hall-of-Fame) - Pitched in 8 games in 1993

Jim Kaat (Hall-of-Fame) - Pitched in 44 games in 1979-80

Kerry Wood (2 time All-Star) - Pitched in 24 games in 2010

Who can you add to this list? (From 1980 on, please. I'll have a list of pre-1980 players coming in a few weeks.)

TWO MORE:

Butch Hobson. He finished his major league career as a New York Yankee in 1982, appearing in 30 games while batting .172 with three RBIs.

Jay Bruce. He recorded one hit and two RBIs in his first game as a Yankee, then Bruce struggled in the following two weeks, batting only .118 in 10 games and striking out 13 times in 39 plate appearances. And then he announced his retirement.

Another one might be Pronk a.k.a. Travis Hafner. His nickname, "Pronk", was given to him by former teammate Bill Selby during spring training of 2003 when people sometimes referred to him as "the Project" and other times "Donkey" for the way he looked when running the bases.

His name, size and infelicitous visage always made me think of Fafner, one of the two giants who build Valhalla for the gods in Das Rheingold.

Do top minor league prospects count? If so, when the Yankees foolishly sent Fred McGriff as a "throw-in" in the trade that sent Dave Collins to the Toronto Blue Jays for Dale Murray, McGriff would make that list.

Robin Ventura, Todd Zeile, Todd Frazier, and Tim Belcher were more noted for the time they spent on other teams, and were not Yankees for too long.

McGriff doesn't make it because he never played for the Yankees. He was traded when he was in A ball. I have written on that before. He was far from the majors at the time of the trade. PLease read this: https://www.startspreadingthenews.blog/post/the-facts-about-the-yankees-fred-mcgriff-trade

Ventura played 230 games in pinstripes, not a cup of coffee.

Ziele played only 66 games with NYY but was never an all-star.

Tim Belcher never played for the Yankees. He was drafted away in what was considered a big story at the time. Believe it or not, he was never an all-star.

you list Cutch as a centerfielder, but I seem to recall seeing him playing left in the Stadium

"A young man from Compton rises to the highest levels of baseball greatness.

Considered one of the classiest baseball players ever, this is Roy White's story, but it's also the story of a unique period in baseball history when the Yankees fell from grace and regained glory and the country dealt with societal changes in many ways."
