I thought it might be interesting to do a quick look at the Yankees' success, in ten and five year increments and seeing how often the team was the best team in the league or division at the end of the season.

This is a study, simply, of first place finishes.

This does not count playoffs and such, it's simply a tally of first place finishes.

The only times the Yankees have exhibited sustained success in the Steinbrenner Era has been the two times the old man was suspended. The fact that collective bargaining entered the scene around the same time Big Stein did makes direct comparisons to previous ownership eras impossible, but nevertheless...there it is. #FreeTheYankees #FireHal

good compilation

might be informative to include a note concerning the introduction of the playoff format, the time when participation in the post-season no longer required a first-place finish.

it's possible that the change for post-season participation had a significant effect.

To me, a World Championship is a LOT more meaningful if my team won the World Series AND finished in first place. Winning a World Series after entering the post season as a second or third place Wild Card, to me, doesn't make my team the best team in baseball. It makes my team, the team who got hot at the right time, while better teams got cold at the wrong time. The best team in baseball is not the team who won the World Series. The best team in baseball is the one who finished with the best record in baseball after playing a full 162 game schedule and experiencing all the winning streaks and the losing streaks…

"A young man from Compton rises to the highest levels of baseball greatness.

Considered one of the classiest baseball players ever, this is Roy White's story, but it's also the story of a unique period in baseball history when the Yankees fell from grace and regained glory and the country dealt with societal changes in many ways."
