I thought it might be interesting to do a quick look at the Yankees' success, in ten and five year increments and seeing how often the team was the best team in the league or division at the end of the season.
This is a study, simply, of first place finishes.
This does not count playoffs and such, it's simply a tally of first place finishes.
By Decades (10 years):
1903-1909 (yes this only 7 years.) - 0 First Place Finishes
1910-1919 - 0 First Place Finishes
1920-1929 - 6 First Place Finishes
1930-1939 - 5 First Place Finishes
1940-1949 - 5 First Place Finishes
1950-1959 - 8 First Place Finishes
1960-1969 - 5 First Place Finishes
1970-1979 - 3 First Place Finishes
1980-1989 - 1 First Place Finish (but with the strike, the Yankees had a first half first place finish in 1981)

The only times the Yankees have exhibited sustained success in the Steinbrenner Era has been the two times the old man was suspended. The fact that collective bargaining entered the scene around the same time Big Stein did makes direct comparisons to previous ownership eras impossible, but nevertheless...there it is. #FreeTheYankees #FireHal

might be informative to include a note concerning the introduction of the playoff format, the time when participation in the post-season no longer required a first-place finish.
it's possible that the change for post-season participation had a significant effect.
