2020 was the bellwether year for Yankees uniform numbers.
In 2020, uniform numbers 79, 82, 83, 84, 86, and 89 all were used for the first time in Yankees history.
HOLY COW!
To date, the only Yankees uniform numbers that have never been worn by a player are 76, 78, 80, 81, 87, and all of the numbers from 92 to 98.
Out of all of these, I am most surprised that #80 has never been worn. That seems like a great uniform number (considering most of these other choices).
I recommend that the next time the Yankees have a Washington, Franklin, Adams, Jefferson, or Hancock, that that player should immediately be given uniform #76. They must do that!
But today we’re looking at one of numbers that debuted in 2020. #84.
Last season Albert Abreu wore #84.
Abreu appeared in two games. He pitched a grand total of 1.1 innings.
In those 1.1 innings, he allowed four hits, he walked two guys, he hit another. In total four runs were charged to his record (three of them earned).
Albert Abreu’s Major League ERA is 20.25.
(On the positive side, he did strikeout two batters.)
And for all of this, at least for now, at least until someone plays in three innings or pitches two, Albert Abreu is the greatest Yankee to ever wear uniform #84.
