Corbin Burnes To ORIOLES!

by Paul Semendinger

February 1, 2024

The Orioles are getting Corbin Burnes, a pitcher many wanted the Yankees to acquire.

From MLBTR:

7:27pm: Milwaukee is also acquiring a Competitive Balance Round A draft choice, reports Mark Feinsand of MLB.com (X link). According to Feinsand, the full trade is Ortiz, Hall and the #34 overall pick in next year’s draft for Burnes.

7:19pm: Shortstop Joey Ortiz and left-hander DL Hall are part of Milwaukee’s return, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN (on X).

7:14pm: The Orioles and Brewers are nearing agreement on a trade that would send ace Corbin Burnes to Baltimore, reports Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic. Jon Heyman of the New York Post tweets that Burnes is indeed headed to the O’s.

Joey Ortiz is #63

D.L. Hall is not listed in the Top 100 nor on the MLB list of Top Prospects by Team.

The Yankees prospects in the Top 100 are:

Jasson Dominguez #41

Spencer Jones #84

Roderick Arias #86

Chase Hampton #92

***

Just a side note - Jasson Dominguez is only the #41 prospect in all of baseball?!

Shouldn't he be higher?

Think about all the love, and the sense, across Yankees fans, that Dominguez is a can't miss prospect and that he is going top be an impact player for the Yankees in 2024...

And he's only the 41st best prospect in the game according to that site?

What do they see or know that we don't?

This is strange, to me.

(I have said, all along, that the Yankees should not be counting on Jasson Dominguez coming off Tommy John surgery in 2024. I was simply urging reasonableness and caution for a player coming off major surgery. I didn't know that the so-called experts didn't think so highly of him. YIKES!)

I am envisioning Soto as a Yankee next year. Big money offer by the Yankees combined with the experience of being a Yankee, and hopefully, winning as a Yankee. But it will take an enormous effort to outbid the Mets, and with Burnes, to outbid the Orioles wealthy new owner.

How they can let him go to the O's is beyond me. As far as dominguez MLB rank goes, consider the source. They are wrong more than right. Remember when they had Peter O’Brien as the NYY top prospect at one point?

I saw news of this disgusting trade this morning and am only now mustering a response. I have a couple of initial thoughts to contribute. Let me lead with this: The offseason is not yet over. Percolate on that for a moment while I espouse a proper reaction:

  1. I write a lot about the need for the Yankees to close the gap on their Divisional rivals. The Birds rolled to 101 wins last season. They now have an ace and two rookies who are fast becoming front part of the rotation starters. We're looking at a World Series contender. They also have some very good bullpen pieces and of course, they have an excellent offense.

  2. They're a well built team…

NO, NO, NO, NO, & NO!!!!

I'm going into Spring Training with the 5 starters I have, and I want to see if Chase Hampton has tighten up his mechanics, and how Warren is doing. Can he pitching on Spring '24 like Monty did in '17? No Gil, because I want to make him my closer of the future. Beeter right now is a reliever.

And Selvidge better start '24 in AA, you hear me Brian?

The Orioles have built their ballclub the way I want the Yankees to build their ballclub. Through wise draft choices and a player development system that ensures that they successfully transition into successful major leaguers. The Orioles have done what I wanted the Yankees to do and have brought their new CORE of homegrown players to the majors, highlighted by Adley Rutschman, Ryan Mountcastle, Gunnar Henderson, John Means, and several others. And the best is yet to come, as their top prospect, and one of the top prospects in all of baseball, Jackson Holliday is being called up this season. The Orioles have created a strong enough farm system that they not only have reinforcements in their farm syst…

Tanking can no longer happen because of the lottery system that is now in place. The mantra is Draft Smarter, Not Higher. The Houston Astros allegedly tanked in the NL Central to get the #1 Draft Pick in the country. And they used it to draft Mark Appel. The Yankees finished in 1st place the year before and got the 32nd pick in the draft (Compensation pick for losing Nick Swisher to the Cleveland Indians) and they used that pick to pick Aaron Judge. And in that same draft as the Astros "tanked" 1st pick of Mark Appel, the 2nd place Dodgers, with the 124th pick (4th round) picked Cody Bellinger. The year before the Yankees ill-fated #1 p…
