Breaking! - Yanks Get Max Fried!

December 10, 2024

***

This from MLBTR:

The Yankees are in agreement with Max Fried on a staggering eight-year, $218MM contract, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN (X link). The agreement is pending a physical.

***

Some quick stats (and more):

WINS - 73

LOSSES - 36

ERA - 3.07

ERA+ - 140

3 Gold Gloves

2 time All-Star

***

QUICK THOUGHTS -

  • This was a huge move. Many fans were wondering if the Yankees were going to make a big move. They did. Fried gets $27.25 per year for 8 years.

  • This morning Ethan proposed getting Fried for $27 million a year for 6 years. Great job Ethan! He nailed an AAV.

  • Fried is an ace!

  • Fried is not young. He'll be 31-years-old next year. BUT, the Yankees (due to the ages of their best players) must be in Win Now Mode. This signals they just might be...

  • The Mets are working to be New York's big baseball team. The Yankees just answered the Soto signing.

  • This cannot be the only move the Yankees make. They need to do more. They need to play BIG. The operative word is BIG. This is a big move, but, far too often, we've seen the Yankees make a big move, say they'll do more, and then go into hibernation.

  • Fried makes the Yankees better today than they were yesterday. His 3.5 WAR doesn't replace what they lost in Soto, but it's a big step in the right direction.

  • Fried is a left-hander. I love left-handed pitching in the Bronx.

  • This should allow Marcus Stroman to be traded.

  • If they get Corbin Burnes (I'm allowed to dream) - OH BOY!!!!!

The Yankees need some real, healthy, legitimate bullpen arms. Carlos Estevez & Tanner Scott are my top 2 wants.

I've been reading that Loaisiga is also on the Mets radar. Imagine if they, or someone else sign him, and keep him healthy all year, at that point, how loudly do other people besides me question the competency of the Yankees medical team?

There was some talk about the Yankees going after Kyle Tucker. I would love to see that.

Fried is the one player I wanted the most this offseason, due to my staunch belief that pitching wins championships. Is the current Yankees rotation now on par with Andy Pettite, peak David Wells, David Cone, Hideki Irabu and El Duque? A lot depends on health, but I'm liking the Yankees rotation right about now. Time to nail down a closer and another bullpen piece hopefully, then on to a first baseman and possibly an outfielder.

I'm in on Santana at 1B, which gives the Yankees a chance to go for Vladdy next season. Santana is a good stop gap. Lot's of rumors though that NYY going after Walker. Interesting play, good clubhouse presence but not the right fit IMHO.

Replying to

I don't blame them. When you trade several good players to get a star who will become a free agent in one year, there is no guarantee they will fee any loyalty to stay. I felt that way when they traded for Soto. There ego got in the way. They must have thought Soto could not resist the allure of the Yankee name. No guarantee, they will stay!
