Framing has got to be the most overrated "skill" in baseball. If you need abstruse mathematics to quantify it how important can it be? Also how is it even a thing? The pitch is supposed to be called when it passes the plate not where the catcher catches it. What passes as "framing" is almost always a catcher blatantly pulling the ball into the strike zone. I'm amazed that umpires are fooled by this.

A guy with career slash numbers of .132/.224/.232 and -1.4 WAR can't possibly be of any value even if he is the greatest pitch "framer" of all time. I won't miss Trevino because 1) he can't hit 2) he can't throw and 3) he's overpaid b…

I hope they are not planning on Jackson -- -0.4 WAR, 26 OPS+, never had positive WAR in his career -- being the backup to Wells.

That's actually a really good CS percentage (28%). Last year, it would have been good for 8th among MLB catchers who played 49 or more games. Wells was at 26% and Trevino at 19%.

Trevino was near the line of his string in NY and a season away from free agency.

the Yankees received great service from Trevino

and now might be able to get some value from Mr Cruz, a guy who racks up strike-outs but allows too many walks

the good news is that the Yanks have time enough to help him improve his efficiency as he is 4 seasons away from free agency

indeed, every pitching coach teaches pitchers to diversify and that variety adds spice to a pitcher's arsenal.

that's been wisdom more than a century in the making and is based on one simple thing.

hitters don't get to the majors unless and until they have learned to hit the fastball.

pitching coaches have two main ways to show pitchers how to beat hitters who know how to clobber a good fastball

1) throw a bunch of non-fastballs and instill doubt a slight bit of hesitation

and/or

2) throw a 100 mile/hr or harder

I suspect that humans can throw 100m+ but rarely and with less than perfect command

to date, few have thrown that hard throughout a career spanning a…

From Compton to the Bronx.jpg

"A young man from Compton rises to the highest levels of baseball greatness.

Considered one of the classiest baseball players ever, this is Roy White's story, but it's also the story of a unique period in baseball history when the Yankees fell from grace and regained glory and the country dealt with societal changes in many ways."
