Breaking: Silver Sluggers! (& Other Award News)

Earlier today, the MLB announced that the Yankees have taken home 3 silver slugger award for Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and the team award.

Quick Thoughts:

This news doesn't come as a surprise. Aaron Judge not only led the American League in most offensive categories, but he led the MLB in: bWAR, Home Runs, RBI's, Walks, On Base Percentage, Slugging Percentage, On-Base Plus Slugging, OPS+, and oWAR. Meanwhile, Juan Soto had himself an absurd full season with the bat putting up career best numbers (in a full season, 2020 not included) in Home Runs, Runs Scored, Hits, Slugging Percentage, OPS+, and bWAR.

Additionally, the Yankees took home the overall team silver slugger award, which also isn't too surprising given their MLB lead in Home Runs and AL-best numbers in wRC+, fWAR, Runs Scored, and RBI's.

The Yankees did also have finalists in Gleyber Torres (at second base) and Giancarlo Stanton (at designated hitter), but they were beaten out by Jose Altuve and Brent Rooker respectively.

Congratulations to Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and the entire Yankees offense for taking home these honors!

Other Award News:

In other award news, it was announced that both Aaron Judge and Juan Soto have placed in the Top-3 for finalists for the American League MVP award. (The other player announced as a finalist is Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals.) I think we can all expect Aaron Judge to win, and seeing Soto place in the Top-3 shows how valuable he was to the Yankees in 2024. (And shows that they cannot let him go.)

Furthermore, the Yankees also were announced to have two finalists for the American League Rookie of the Year award in Luis Gil and Austin Wells. (The other announced finalist is Colton Cowser of the Baltimore Orioles.) This award seems like it could go to any of the three candidates, however, Luis Gil definitely has a leg up after also being named the Baseball Digest American League Rookie of the Year less than a week ago.

The MLB schedule for announcing awards is quite a handful over the next two weeks, including a slew of awards to be announced on November 14th including the:

  • The "All-MLB" Teams for the AL and NL

    • Yankees should expect Judge and Soto to be 1st-team members

    • Other players like Torres, Wells, Stanton, Weaver, etc. could be 2nd-team members

  • The Hank Aaron Award

    • Again, this is likely to go to Aaron Judge

  • The Mariano Rivera/Trevor Hoffman Reliever of the Year Awards

  • The Edgar Martinez Outstanding DH Award, and

  • The Comeback Player of the Year Award

On November 18th, the BBWAA will announce the winners of the Rookie of the Year Awards.

On November 19th, the BBWAA will announce the winners of the Manager of the Year Awards.

On November 20th, the BBWAA will announce the winners of the Cy Young Awards.

On November 21st, the BBWAA will announce the winners of the MVP Awards.

On November 22nd, the MLB will announce the winner of the Heart & Hustle Awards. (The Yankees nominee this year is Anthony Volpe.)

Soto isn't owned by the Yankees and it's Soto's decision as to whether he goes or stays.

the Yankees may want to retain his services but there are rumors that Soto is expecting to soon be appointed to the US Court of Appeals, DC Circuit
