BN: Yankees/Dodgers Making Trade WITH UPDATE

Updated: Dec 11, 2023

UPDATE:

December 11, 2023:

FROM MLBTR:

"The Yankees are acquiring left-handed reliever Victor Gonzalez and minor league infield prospect Jorbit Vivas from the Dodgers in exchange for minor league infielder Trey Sweeney,"

News is out that the Yankees are helping the Dodgers free up some 40-Man roster space. No, this is not for Ohtani, Betts, or Freeman.

Who is Coming to the Bronx?

I have no idea yet, however, this is a smart move for the Yankees to make as it appears (from Sherman) that another spot start-type pitcher could be coming to the Bronx.

This trade is coming on the heels of the Dodgers signing Shohei Ohtani and Joe Kelly- of which neither signing has been officially announced- from which they need to clear 2 spaces on their 40-man roster.

After the Yankees just departed their 6th and 7th starters in Jhony Brito and Randy Vasquez, this is a area where the Yankees can make improvements to try and fix some holes. And, given how the Yankees have many 40-Man roster holes from the recent trades for Soto and Verdugo, this is is likely a smart move to make.

Outside of the little news out so far, the package back is unknown. My only hope is that the players the Yankees are bringing back have minor-league options.

When the players in this deal are announced, I will update later with my thoughts.

A little thought experiment/hope: Ryan Yarbrough does fit the "back end pitcher" role and Michael Busch does fit the "prospect on the 40-Man" role. Both would be VERY exciting to bring to the Bronx.

it is Trey Sweeney to the Dodgers for lefty reliever Victor Gonzalez and infield prospect Jorbit Vivas.

It's a Rob Manfred-led scheme to stick it to the Yankees and benefit the Dodgers. He's forcing the Yankees to give up infielder Trey Sweeney, who has 111 games at AA, and FOR WAHT? An infielder with a better AA/AAA OPS than Sweeney and a lefty reliever with a MLB career 135 ERA+ (109 in 34 games last year)? WAHT A RIP-OFF!!! It's a conspricacy, consiparcy, constipacy -- it's a PLOT against the Yankees!!!!!!

Ethan came up with this (and I like it):

Yankees get a pitcher (Yarbrough?) and Michael Busch

Dodgers get Roderick Arias.

Busch is a top prospect - and he's a lefty-hitting third baseman. CHECK. Yup, that's great.

Yarbrough is a solid swing man for the rotation and pen. CHECK. Yup, that helps.

Arias is a top Yankees prospect. But he's a shirtstop. By all accounts, with Anthony Volpe, that position is covered for the next decade or two.

If Ethan's deal is correct, it's a HUGE win for the Yankees. Gigantic.

Andre Robertson was seen as a glove-first guy. He was supposed to be great - before the accident.

My poiunt is that, as you have stated, the Yankees don't rush players through the system so Arias is years away. That doesn't help in 2024. The Yankees need a third baseman. (That will be the Tuesday Discussion topic tomorrow).

We'll disagree on this, but I'll take the third baseman for 2024 rather than the single-A kid years away who might help in a few years.

Hell NO! I want at least one top prospect of my choosing as part of the deal. Otherwise this sounds like a deal MLB is making the Yankees swallow.

Maybe Ryan Yarbrough?
