"New York Yankees’ right-hander Luis Gil won a tight election to take the American League Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Award, winning by just five points.

Since the BBWAA went to a three-player ballot in Rookie of the Year voting in 1980 following the 1979 tie in the American League between John Castino of the Minnesota Twins and Alfred Griffin of the Toronto Blue Jays, this is the second closest election in the AL. The only one closer than this differential was in 2003 with Kansas City Royals shortstop Angel Berroa outpointing New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui, 88-84.

This election marks the 10th time a Yankees player has been honored, the most in the AL. The Los Angeles Dodgers hold the overall record with 18 winners in the National League. Other Yankees winners were Gil McDougald in 1951, Bob Grim in 1954, Tony Kubek in 1957, Tom Tresh in 1962, Stan Bahnsen in 1968, Thurman Munson in 1970, Dave Righetti in 1981, Derek Jeter in 1996 and Aaron Judge in 2017.

Gil is the fifth Dominican-born winner and the second pitcher, joining Neftali Feliz (2010). The others were Griffin, Berroa and Julio Rodriguez (2022).

Colton Cowser of the Baltimore Orioles was listed on one more ballot than Gil, who had two more first-place votes. No player was named to every ballot.

Ballots were submitted prior to postseason play. They are tabulated on a system that awards five points for first place, three points for second place, one point for third place."

The AL voting went as follows:

"Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes won the National League Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Award.

Only four players received votes, the fewest in National League Rookie of the Year voting since the BBWAA went to a three-player ballot in 1980. The previous low had been five, in 2001 when Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals won the election and 1998 when Kerry Wood of the Chicago Cubs was the winner. The all-time low total of players to receive votes was three in the American League election of 1983 won by Ron Kittle of the Chicago White Sox.

Skenes is only the second Pirates winner of this award. The only other was outfielder Jason Bay in 2004 when the Pirates became the last pre-expansion franchise with a Rookie of the Year winner.

Skenes, the 24th pitcher to win the NL Rookie of the Year Award, and Jackson Merrill of the Padres were named on all ballots.

Ballots were cast prior to postseason play. They are tabulated on a system that rewards five points for first place, three points for second place and one point for third place."

Sal Maiorana, a friend of the site,

judged that Wells' season rated a C+

which sorta implies that Sal might decide that Gil was worthy of a B- ...or better

(assuming that Sal places some faith in the decisions of the BBWAA)

I'm surprised Gil and Cowser were not on every ballot.
