by Dale Mather May 8, 2023 *** About Last Night: Yankees 7 Oakland 2 The Yankees were being shutout for the first innings, but finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, on a two run home run off the bat of Oswaldo Cabrera. The offense took off after that, with three more Home Runs! These included two run shots by from both DJ LeMahieu and Aaron Hicks (his first of 2023), and a solo homer from Gleyber Torres.
Nasty Nestor didn't have his best stuff again tonight, but did manage to keep the game close.
Ron Marinaccio picked up the win over former Yankee J.P. Sears.
Quick Stats: The Yankees had home runs from: O Cabrera (2, 5th inning off J Sears, 0 on, 1 out) G Torres (5, 6th inning off J Sears, 0 on, 1 out), D LeMahieu (4, 6th inning off J Sears, 0 on, 1 out),
A Hicks (1, 7th inning off A Pruitt, 0 on, 1 out), 2B - G Torres (7) 3B - H Bader (2) RBI - A Hicks 2 (4), G Torres (13), D LeMahieu 2 (16), O Cabrera 2 (10) The Big Story: Once again, the biggest story was a player not playing in the game Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge. The good news is that Aaron Judge will be back in the line-up tonight, and since the Yankees are playing the Athletics, we can consider that the equivalent to a Triple A warm-up game.
We also have to keep an eye out for Nestor Cortez to have a better outing next time out. He hasn't looked like Nasty the last couple games.
Player of the Game: The Yankees bullpen again giving up no runs in four innings of work.
The 4 home runs on the night was great to see, so you could certainly pick one of those game changers too!
Notable Performances:
There was some great defense at third tonight by Isiah Kiner-Falefa who flashed some terrific leather on several plays.
Better to Forget: Another less than Nasty performance from Nestor Cortez. I would like to point out Aaron Boone did actually pull Cortez when he began to loose effectiveness at the third time through the line-up That was good managing.
. My Take: No games are a gimmie, and although the Yankees did pull out the win today, the game was tied 2-2 in the 6th inning before the bats exploded for three more home runs. Look for the Yankees offense to continue the power surge tonight as an eager and rested Aaron Judge will tee off for the first time in weeks.
Next Up: Yankees and Oakland will battle again tonight at 7:05 p.m. The Yankees will go with Clarke Schmidt (0-3 5.83 ERA) who will be apposed by Drew Rucinski who currently is 0-2 on the season with an 7.71 ERA. Let's all hope Clarke Schmidt comes up with a gem!
who play left field?
Last night, Aaron Hicks looked like he was ready to tear up the league -- the International League.
