About Last Night: Yankees 3, A's 2

by Paul Semendinger

About Last Night:

Well, they did it again. The Yankees won. That's now five wins in a row. All they do is win. Win, win, win.

Last night it was Gerrit Cole who earned the W. He had a heck of a game. He pitched into the eighth inning. He gave up just three hits. He struck out eleven batters.

The Yankees banged out nine hits. Every starter except Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Giancarlo Stanton had a least one hit. Aaron Judge hit his 49th homer of the year.

Not long ago, the Yankees called up Oswaldo Cabrera and Estevan Florial. They infused some life into a lifeless team. Now, all they do is win.

Win, win, win. Quick Stats:

  • Gerrit Cole won his first game since July 17

  • Gerrit Cole now has 10 wins on the season.

  • Aaron Judge hit his 49th homer of the year

  • As a team, the Yankees have 200 home runs leading MLB

  • Oswaldo Cabrera had three hits last night

Player(s) of the Game:

Gerrit Cole takes the honors here. He's the ace. He pitched like one. Better to Forget:

Yes, they won, but if one looks closely, the Yankees batted in nine different innings and scored in only one of them. They had a three-run fifth inning. That was the only time they scored.

Nestor Cortes is on the 15-day I.L. Again, it sure would have been nice to have Jordan Montgomery around to help manage the innings for the pitchers who need rest. (On the flip side, it seems that Harrison Bader might start running soon. Maybe, just maybe, he'll start playing in a few weeks. Imagine that!) My Take:

Of course, before this five-game winning streak, all they did was lose. Lose, lose lose.

I have to be honest, the streaks that this team goes through are not fun. The winning is, but there has been a pattern, a long-standing pattern, that after winning streaks, they then lose. A lot. We've seen this for years. It isn't fun.

Yes, they are winning, but the last two wins have come at the expense of the A's - the worst team in the American League. These are the games that a team has to win. It's not impressive that they're winning them, they simply just have to win them.

I'm not sold on the 2022 Yankees. In the end, that matters little. If they keep winning, they'll eventually prove that they are better than I believe them to be. I'd be happy to be wrong about this team while the players are celebrating a World Championship.

Next Up:

Domingo German takes to the mound tonight at 9:07 p.m. against the A's.

That was a badly played game by the offense, and they won only because their ace pitched a great game against a Triple-A lineup. 10 LOB. 1-for-8 RISP. Luckily the "1" was a three-run homer by Judge. The A's brought the winning run to the plate in the 9th. Against a real MLB team -- let alone an excellent one like the AL-leading Astros -- that game would have been a loss. The principal sin was not getting Cabrera in after his lead-off triple. Just a sac fly would have been enough. Then just pick up one more hit (2-for-7 RISP is not unreasonable), and this game would have been the easy win it should have been. But i…

against a real MLB team, the Yankees would have been inspired to score 37 runs

....after winning streaks, they then lose. A lot.

it seems to happen to baseball teams..... those games that they don't win are games that they lose.

as for losing A lot .....

well, not so much.

the team wins a lot more than they lose.

they're again 30 games over and have won 62% of the games that they've played

their lead in the AL East remains a fat one.

and they held fast to the plan to rest the players. at present, it's Nestor and Holmes and Efross in the beach chairs and on the massage tables.

Stanton is just back from his spa month.

resting players has cost them some games, but they won so many games for…

To be fair, his hirelings and offspring haven't needed a presidential pardon. Yet.
