About Last Night: Playoffs!

***

Last night the Yankees defeated the Mariners 2-1 in 10 innings.

This is a very quick re-cap following a late game. (Uggg, the West Coast!)

  • Nestor Cortes was terrific. He went six innings, allowing 4 hits and no runs.

  • The Yankees got their first run in the second inning on an Anthony Rizzo single that scored Jasson Dominguez.

  • I am happy for Anthony Rizzo. He's an easy guy to root for.

  • I am also happy that Jasson Dominguez is playing a role in these wins.

  • The Yankees 1-0 lead lasted until the bottom of the 8th inning. Clay Holmes surrendered a game-tying homer to Justin Turner.

  • I feel bad for Clay Holmes, but he is not a good pitcher right now. H cannot be brought into meaningful spots.

  • The Yankes took the lead in the 10th inning. It was the same players as in the second inning. Anthony Rizzo doubled home the ghost runner (named Jasson Dominguez).

  • Ian Hamilton closed out the win. Julio Rodriguez was picked off third in a strange play. Randy Arozarena struck out, but the bat flew out of his hands. Rodriguez ran away from the flying bat but strayed too far and was picked off. Jason Turner then struck out to end the game.

  • The Yankees are in the post season!!!!!

Holmes needs to be given the Kimbrel Treatment and DFA'd immediately. He is a disaster waiting to happen. He has a hard time throwing strikes, and when he does, they get hit to Kingdom Come (there's a Seattle joke there about Kingdome Gone, but it would be distracting from the point of this rant). Holmes should then go into business with Kimbrel selling cough drops -- they are both experts in sucking, after all.

Once again, my comment was somehow deleted. So, let me try it again ( I've had the same problem of posting comments since we all were somehow unable to publish that day):

Clark Schmidt needs to keep up with Cole, Gil, & Nasty Nestor, so no foot off the gas for him today;

Dominguez showed last night what his speed can do, just like Jazz and Volpe (if he gets on another hot streak)......

....Speaking of Volpe, I forget what site I saw this on, but Volpe has had a very roller coaster season offensively. Something like 35 games on, 17 games down, 19 games up, etc. Now that to me was an incredible stat to be given.

All we…

At what point do the Yankees move on from Holmes? I mean, the guy is doing everything he can to be let go, or at least relegated to mop up/low leverage innings, but they keep throwing him out there.

I want his job security…

is it possible that the organization, rather than moving second-tier pitching prospects into a relief role, has instead decided that there's more utility gained by trading away those pitchers?

they seem to have had some reasonable success with the importation of no-cost reclamation project guys in relief roles
