About Last Night: NYY 3, LAA 2

by Carlos Martinez-Cabrera

April 20, 2023

***

It took ten innings, but the Yankees beat the Angels last night 3-2.

Quick Stats -

  • Winning Pitcher: Ian Hamilton (1-1, 1.86 ERA)

  • Losing Pitcher: Matt Moore (1-1, 2.00 ERA)

  • Save: N/A

  • Home Runs (New York): Judge (6)

  • Home Runs (Los Angeles): N/A

Big Story: The Yankees came into this game with their series winning streak on the line after having lost the first game of the series yesterday. Yankees fans also awaited to see if Jhony Brito was able to bounce back after allowing 7 runs in 1 inning in his last start.

The game started out with an exciting catch by Aaron Judge robbing Shohei Ohtani of a homer in the process. Later in the same inning, Aaron Judge hit a two-run home run to give the Yankees the early lead.

In the top of the 4th, Anthony Volpe made a wonderful play to put away Anthony Rendon. Volpe is starting to show that he is for real. He was on base three times last night. He is getting it done with his bat and his glove.

In the following inning, Taylor Ward grounded out to Volpe while getting the Angels their first run. The Angels were able to score the game-tying run in the 8th.

The Yankees won the game in the bottom of the 10th inning. Gleyber Torres came up with the bases loaded and hit a long fly to center field to drive in the game-winning run.

Player(s) of the Game: Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres. Aaron Judge had a huge first inning. robbing Shohei Ohtani AND hitting a homer in the same inning Later in the game, Judge also mades a diving catch.

Gleyber Torres has been in a slump but he hit the sacrifice fly that drove in the game-winning run.

My Take: The Yankees pulled off the win although it was not exactly the most exciting game. Still, they pulled it off. he Yankee's pitching was excellent last night while limiting the Angels to a couple of runs. There was even an exciting moment when Wandy Peralta was able to strike out Shohei Ohtani in the 8th inning with the tying runner of base. An Ohtani homer there could have lost the game for the Yanks.

The Yankee's offense has not been the best as they have been pretty limited offensively. There were various players in the lineup who went 0 for 4.. Even when the Yankees had the bases loaded, they were only able to do so based on the ghost runner, intentional base on balls, and a hit by pitch. Not very exciting to say the least.

But something that has been exciting is watching Anthony Volpe on the base paths and on defense. Tonight, he made a couple of wonderful plays while getting his 8th steal of the year.

Up Next: This afternoon, the Yankees will see if they can keep their streak alive by beating the Angels at 4:05 P.M. Nestor Cortes will pitch for the Bronx Bombers.

Hicks has had some arm trouble and no longer pitches as effectively as he had in days of yore

Yeah, not everybody comes back as strong or stronger from Tommy John surgery.

This game reinforced just how great of an all around player Aaron Judge is, and showed us what Volpe can do. I like to say a win is a win, but they had 18 LOB. Big picture is they need to improve their situational hitting, and right away. Bright side is without Stanton they can play more fundamental baseball and still feature power. We'll find out in thext 30 games.

A pitching rotation is made up of 9 or 10, or even more. Not 5. The Yankee depth was traded away. You know the names. So the current 3-5 starters (6, 7, and 8 in the depth chart) have thrown 43.1 innings and have a combined ERA of 6.06. You want to give the coaches and GM credit for that, go right a head. I look at it differently. I see the Bader trade and Montas trade as moves that are now being felt in a negative light.

I will never like the automatic (ghost, zombie, Manfred Man, take your pick) runner rule. Its a complete abomination and an insult to fans. It used to be that you couldn't steal first base. Well now you don't have to - after the 9th inning you're gifted second base courtesy of MLB and the MLBPA. Even Bowie Kuhn and Bud Selig as horrendous as they were did not sink to this level.
