A Generational Mistake

by Paul Semendinger

I wrote it a lot at the time, and many times since. The Yankees passing on Bryce Harper was a decision that will cost them forever. It was a generational mistake. It was one of the biggest mistakes that the Yankees, as a franchise, ever made.

Bryce Harper would have owned New York. He would have been this generation's Reggie Jackson. He was the one piece that would have made a huge difference.

He was the right player for the right team at the right time. At the exact moment when the Yankees should have gone big, they went small, and they have never recovered.

Just think of the players the Yankees have tried in the outfield as they have attempted to find a player to fill the void that Bryce Harper would have filled. The following players have all appeared as outfielder for the Yankees since 2019 when they did not even make an offer to Bryce Harper to play alongside Aaron Judge and bat in between Judge and Stanton in the lineup:

  • Brett Gardner

  • Aaron Hicks

  • Mike Tauchman

  • Cameron Maybin

  • Clint Frazier

  • Tyler Wade

  • Thairo Estrada

  • Gio Urshela

  • Miguel Andujar

  • Estevan Florial

  • Greg Allen

  • Joey Gallo

  • Ryan LaMarre

  • Trey Amburgey

  • Hoy Park

  • Andrew Benintendi

  • Marwin Gonzalez

  • Oswaldo Cabrera

  • Tim Locastro

  • Matt Carpenter

  • Isiah Kiner-Falefa

  • Jake Bauers

  • Billy McKinney

  • Franchy Cordero

  • Willie Calhoun

  • Harrison Bader

  • Everson Pereira

  • Jasson Dominguez

Think, also, of the players the Yankees had to trade away to acquire some of those players. Amazing.

Bryce Harper could have been doing the following in pinstripes:

Will easily go down as the one of the worst decisions made in the history of the franchise.

You have illuminated Cashman's failings as GM and Harper at the time received a lot of negative press in NY if I remember correctly so once Yankees passed the PR department went into overdrive and he signed with Philly. No problem for the fan base but the results of not signing him still lingers in minds of many "What could have been?"

in 5 seasons with Philly, Harper has provided plenty of power and excitement as well as some questionable defense.

in 5 seasons with Philly, 4 as a right fielder, Harper has provided 18.5 WAR, an average of 3.7 WAR/season

the Yankees could have really used that 3.7 WAR/season from a right fielder.

this season, Harper moved out of the outfield and onto 1B... and provided 3.7 WAR

the Yankees could have really used that 3.7 WAR

in the off-season and during free agency I was open to the idea of signing Harper

but conditioned the signing on the ability of the Yankees to trade away Stanton to the Dodgers

my idea was that three right fielders would tilt the outfield, but if they could send Stanton way and get Bellinger, it would be pretty nifty. Bellinger would be a fine 1B

and Harper in the outfield wouldn't be much worse than Stanton in the outfield

as I've noted above, in 2018 they played Stanton in left field and he couldn't cover and ended up with a -0.4 dWAR

Harper would have been a misadventure in left in the Stadium. his 2018 Washington outfield dWAR was -2.7.

Once Stanton was acquired, I said they will not be going after Harper or Machado a year later. Thats why I didnt like the Stantin trade when it happened. Harper was who i wanted. Getting rid of Girardi, i felt the Yankees wete going to take a step back. Sonny Gray was still here. Rothschild was not allowed to coach his way, but wasn't let go. The ruination of Gary Sanchez began in earnest.
