Here is a comprehensive overview of the Yankees organization and some brief insights into the many players that are a part of it.
A lot goes into operating a Major League Baseball franchise. Sure, everyone sees the 26-man active roster and the nearly $300 million payroll that goes along with it. However, that is just a fraction of what it takes.
In 2024, the Yankees had 54 people play in the majors. They had 55 and 54 in 2023 and 2022, respectively. That leads me to believe they will use between 53 and 56 in 2025. The 40-man roster is a bit complicated and not every player on it is Major League ready.
Start figuring in injuries or slight improvements on fringe players and there are a lot of moving pieces. It’s possible that there’s 5-6 roster spots that employ 15-20 of the yearly roster.
Add in the minor league affiliates, the international free agents, and the amateur draft and once again the organization employed over 400 players. By my count, the Yankees had 413 players in 2024, up slightly from the 408 in 2022 and 412 in 2023.
A strong farm system allows a team to make trades to improve the parent ballclub. Over the last several years the Yankees have produced lots of Major League ready talent to other teams. This is a good reputation to have, but also weakens the system until it can be rebuilt.
They are dozens of players Rule 5 eligible after the season. Oftentimes, these players are either promoted or traded prior to the deadline. Here is a handful of notable players to keep a close eye on: Angel Benitez, Rafael Flores, Josue Gonzalez, Anthony Hall, Chase Hampton, Spencer Jones, Eric Reyzelman, Luis Serna, Brock Selvidge, Henry LaLane, Zach Messinger, Cam Schlitter, and Trystan Vrieling.
Here is a bit of a breakdown on some of the players and a comparison between 2022 and 2024:
The year in which players were born:
With the draft reduced to 20 rounds, there’s going to be less and less drafted players and a continued rise in undrafted players.
With the reduced number of active minor leaguers available to be rostered, the shorter leash will be noticeable as several international players were cut within a year of signing. This could also lead to older IFA signings.
I also like to highlight former first round picks as they usually have more pedigree and often given more opportunities:
Clayton Beeter
Gerrit Cole
Jeter Downs
Trent Grisham
Jordan Groshans
Ben Hess
Alex Jackson
Spencer Jones
Aaron Judge
Justin Lange
George Lombard Jr
Carlos Rodon
Clarke Schmidt
Anthony Seigler
Marcus Stroman
Bubba Thompson
Taylor Trammell
Anthony Volpe
Luke Weaver
Austin Wells
Also keep in mind that this information is for calendar year 2024. Some of these players have just recently been added to the organization. Others have been gone for nearly a year already.
