Morning Discussion:

On Mark Leiter Jr.:

If you look at Leiter Jr.'s baseball savant page, it is incredibly endearing. Lots and lots of red, and lots and lots of top percentile stuff. The problem however, is that advanced metrics only tell some of the story. Leiter Jr. is a risk for the bullpen, as he is a career 4.53 ERA guy over 200+ innings in the bullpen across parts of 5 MLB seasons. If this is the only bullpen move, it's bad. If it's one of many, for Matt Blake to work his magic, this is a great move. Time will tell. Also: Mark's father (Mark Leiter) and his uncle (Al Leiter) both pitched for the Yankees. Maybe this could mean a future where Jack Leiter comes to the Bronx!

On Brett Phillips:

Speaking of relievers, the Yankees are also signing Brett Phillips (the former infielder) to a minor league deal as a reliever. Footage came out yesterday of him at a game (see video here) and he did look very good. If nothing else, this is a fun story to follow for the rest of the season to see if he can make the transition to being a bullpen arm in the MLB. Phillips always seemed like a top clubhouse guy, and I will never- ever- say no to signing guys with potential to minor league deals.

On Yandy Diaz:

I want the Yankees to get Yandy Diaz, and according to a rumor (above) they are one of the final three teams involved in a trade for him. He is a good bat, could potentially play first and/or third base, and will actually be cheaper than Anthony Rizzo for next year, even with Rizzo's $6M buy-out. (Rizzo would make $17M if not bought-out, Diaz is on the hook for $10M. There is a $1M savings there...maybe for Soto?) Plus, he could become a good bench-bat next year if Ben Rice turns out to be great.

On Gerrit Cole:

Gerrit Cole reported from general body fatigue ahead of tonight's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. This is pure speculation, but maybe Cole is starting to show wear and tear, especially after trying (so far) to come back from injury quickly this year (with little to show for it). I think this also makes it that Nestor Cortes will not be traded in the next few hours. The Yankees cannot play it too safe with starting pitchers. (Though, if they believe Will Warren is the real deal, maybe then it makes sense to trade Cortes and capitalize on a very hot sellers market.)

I want to say if we were not going to buy today question why not sell? But I guess that would look too much like pulling the rug out from underneath the players? It’s one thing not to go out and get a Aaron Judge the help that he deserves it’s another thing to trade away his teammates I guess

Okay. I think I got everything. If I didn't, I'm sorry.

But, that's it for me. Thanks for following along...what a disappointment from the Yankees. Every year I get excited, and every year they let me down.

Kelly Austin, the player the Yankees received for Ferguson, had a 3-0 record with 3 saves and a 2.21 ERA (36.2IP, 30H, 12R/9ER, 7BB, 46K, 5HR) in 26 relief appearances with Single-A Fayetteville (8G) and High-A Asheville (18G) this season. Over two minor league seasons in the Astros organization (2023-24), he has gone 3-0 with three saves and a 2.95 ERA (36.2IP, 31H, 15R/12ER, 9BB, 46K, 5HR) in 27 relief appearances.

Part of the price the Dodgers paid to get Jack Flaherty is former Yankee prospect Trey Sweeney.
