This is going to be our open thread for the night but I thought it would be fun to look back at 10 years ago tonight because we have finally arrived at a date on the calendar when we can do that and have there be a regular season game we can talk about!
April 3, 2005 was Opening Night of the 2005 season, it was scheduled to be an 8 p.m. ESPN game (of course) and the Yankees were welcoming the defending world champion Boston Red Sox into Yankee Stadium for the first time since that awful October night that none of us like remembering.
As I was looking at the boxscore and play by play on Baseball Reference I couldn't believe how much of the game I didn't remember. It's funny how your memory plays tricks on you because I was at this particular game and I didn't even remember that David Wells was the starter for Boston. At least I remembered that Randy Johnson started for the Yankees. (I still can't believe he was ever a Yankee.)
Like how did I forget that Wells hit Jason Giambi in two at bats? Giambi was my favorite player at the time! I did remember that he got a hit in his first at bat because I remember yelling at some guy in a Red Sox shirt behind me who was booing him.
I also remembered that Hideki Matsui had a good night and that the Yankees won big but other than that, it's all a blur.
Do you have any games like that? Games that you went to and could swear were won on a hit to right field when it was actually a hit to left? Or a game when you don't even remember that an ex-Yankee was the opposing starter?
Let's discuss this phenomenon in the comments. Enjoy your evening!
