Game 112 Quick Recap: DET 4 NYY 3

Brian McCann, Hiroki Kuroda The need for extra relief help is obvious when you look at the kind of length the Yankees have been getting from their rotation and got last night from Hiroki Kuroda.  But when it gets to extra innings and your last available option is Matt Daley, the writing's kinda on the wall.  Daley gave up the game-losing dinger in the 12th to spoil a very winnable game.

I'm not sure how fair it is to reference the Yankees' history against David Price when half their starting lineup was playing in the NL last year, but those new guys seemed to do just fine against him.  Brian McCann popped a solo HR off him in the 2nd and Martin Prado did the same in the 5th for 2 of the 3 New York runs.  Jacoby Ellsbury doubled in the third in the 3rd.

Hirok gave up a run in the 1st on a pair of singles and a sac fly, but was otherwise cruising early.  He retired 13 in a row through 5 before Andrew Romine touched him up for a leadoff homer in the 6th.  Then the 7th came and Hirok couldn't finish off the inning, giving up back-to-back singles to Nick Castellanos and Alex Avila with 2 outs to tie the game.

That was the big difference between the starts.  Kuroda went 7 with 3 ER against while Price went 8.2.  Neither walked a batter and they combined to strike out 15, but Price pitched deeper into the game and left his team with more and better relief options in extras.  Oh well.  Go out there and try again tonight.

Game Notes:

- Congrats to Prado for his first multi-hit game as a Yankee and first HR as a Yankee.

- Rich Hill, the departed Matt Thornton's replacement, made his Yankee debut last night and hit the only batter he faced in the 11th.  Congrats for that too, I guess.

- The non-Daley portion of the bullpen was rock solid.  Dellin Betances, Shawn Kelley, David Huff, Esmil Rogers, and Hill combined for 3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K.

- 2 more hits for Ellsbury, who looks like he's primed to break out of his slump.  That would be nice.

- Mark Teixeira was back in the lineup.  He went 0-5 with a strikeout.
