A few prospect updates at Baseball America today. First off, they released their top 50 mid-season prospect list. The Yankees landed two guys, Gary Sanchez and Rafael DePaula. Sanchez was listed at 34, and they mentioned that scouting reports liked his defense, while DePaula came in at 45 overall, and they shortly mentioned his quick ascension through the system.
The organization also landed in a list of five organizations that have struggled. Cooper mentions the slow starts by Williams and Slade Heathcott, as well as a less than stellar start from Tyler Austin.
Overall, the Yankees system has struggled in the beginning of this season, but you have to keep the organization's minor league teams in the right frame of mind. The Yankees have an extremely pitcher-friendly minor league system, and the majority of their top prospects are young position players that are struggling in huge ballparks and difficult leagues. For that same reason, I'm doubtful of pitching prospects that have succeeded. I wrote more about minor league expectations here.
